What Is the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Stream?

ITIL 4 Managing Professional (MP) is the practitioner-level designation within the ITIL 4 qualification scheme. It is designed for IT practitioners who work with technology and digital teams across all areas of service management. Earning the MP designation requires passing four separate module exams and holding a valid ITIL 4 Foundation certificate. The MP credential signals that you can apply ITIL practices operationally, not just describe them theoretically.

Each module exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 28 correctly (70%) to pass. Questions are scenario-based and test application rather than memorization, so rote learning is a poor strategy. You need to understand how the practices interact in real service delivery situations.

The Four MP Modules Explained

Create, Deliver and Support (CDS)

CDS covers the end-to-end creation of products and services and their delivery to customers. Key topics include value stream mapping, service desk practices, incident and problem management, release management, and workforce planning. This is the most operationally focused module and is a good starting point if you work in service operations or DevOps.

Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV)

DSV addresses the engagement and interaction between service providers and customers, users, suppliers, and partners. It covers the customer journey from exploration to co-creation, marketing principles applied to IT, and service level agreements. Expect heavy scenario content around identifying stakeholder needs and designing engagement models.

High Velocity IT (HVIT)

HVIT focuses on digital product teams and organizations that operate at high speed. It blends ITIL with concepts from Agile, Lean, DevOps, and site reliability engineering. Topics include the five ITIL objectives for high velocity (valuable investments, fast development, resilient operations, co-created value, assured conformance) and the DORA metrics. This is the most conceptually dense module.

Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI)

DPI is the strategic module. It covers organizational direction, planning, governance, and continual improvement. The ITIL continual improvement model, operating models, and measurement frameworks are central. DPI shares some content with the ITIL 4 Strategic Leader stream, giving MP holders a foundation for future progression toward the ITIL Master designation.

Who Should Pursue the Managing Professional Designation?

The MP stream targets mid-career IT professionals who are responsible for day-to-day service delivery, product management, or team leadership. Typical candidates include service delivery managers, IT operations leads, DevOps coaches, and ITSM tool administrators. If you hold the ITIL v3 Expert designation, you can convert to ITIL 4 Managing Professional through an official bridging module rather than sitting all four exams.

Foundation Prerequisite and Exam Logistics

  • ITIL 4 Foundation required: You must hold a valid ITIL 4 Foundation certificate before registering for any MP module. There is no time limit on how long you have between modules, but all four must be completed to claim the MP designation.
  • Accredited training body: AXELOS (now PeopleCert) requires that you complete an accredited training course for each module before sitting the exam. Self-study without an accredited course is not permitted — this is a key difference from many other certification schemes.
  • Exam format: 40 scenario-based questions, 90 minutes, closed book. A score of 28 or above passes. Questions present a situation and ask which ITIL practice or concept best applies.
  • Recommended order: Most practitioners start with CDS (most operationally relevant), then DPI (builds strategic context), then DSV and HVIT. However, any order is acceptable.

Study Resources and Exam Strategy

The official ITIL 4 Managing Professional practice books published by TSO are the authoritative source for each module. Supplement them with the official AXELOS sample papers, which are freely available and mirror the real exam's scenario style closely. For video content, ITpreneurs and Good e-Learning both offer accredited MP courses.

The hardest part of ITIL 4 scenario questions is distinguishing between two plausible answers. The correct answer is almost always the one that creates the most value for the customer or aligns with the service value system as a whole. When two options look similar, ask which one is more focused on co-creating value rather than just completing a task.
